Ancient Egypt/Book and Treasure Chest
Published in Hardcover by Running Press (October, 1994)
Authors: George Hart and James Putnam
Average review score:

Great History tool
This is just the sort of thing I would have loved when I was a kid. I'm an adult and I love it anyway. This is a great way to spark a child's interest in history. For someone who already loves studying ancient Egypt it will provide hours of fun. The package is beautiful and makes a wonderful gift.

It's mine! Finally! At last!
First of all, I LOVE ancient Egypt. I saw the kit, and wanted it so bad, it really wasn't funny. Anyway, I first saw this kit at the dia (detroit institute of arts) gift shop over three years ago. It was love at first sight. Then finally two days ago when I went with my dad, I had money, nobody was with us so we could buy stuff without people wanting to get something, so I went up to it, took it off the shelf and hugged it so hard that it wasn't funny. My dad saw me, ripped it out of my hands, put it on the shelf and taunted me about it all the way home. I was bummed. Afterwards I told my mom. She bought it for me the next day! I've had so much fun with it! I love it! It's got to be hard to stuff all of that FUN stuff into one small kit! There's hieroglyphic stamps, a decoder wheel, stuff to make a shibati necklace, a senet game, a book, and tons more! If you're a dad, or mom, and your kid wants this, don't taunt them, there's nothing to taunt. If they have money, let them buy it. If they don't, buy for them for their birthday, or Christmas, or just for a special "What the heck, you can have it" gift!

Memorable - and FUN - Egyptian Adventure
THE highest point of our family's Great Egyptian Semester. It's a sturdy cardboard "chest" that opens up to reveal lots of fun, hands-on stuff to read, play with and make. Items include a hieroglyphic stamp set and holder, papyrus to print on, hieroglyphic code wheel, a Senet game, charts and more.

We bought the Treasure Chest to be a fun part of our family's Great Egyptian Semester, and it proved to be a winner. In fact, demand in our house was so high, we had to regulate the time any one kid could spend with it (Dad played with it at night).

Want to change your world??? Change your thoughts...
This is the most awesome cassette. I had read the book. But this audio cassette is wonderful to listen to in the car during your commute, or in the house while cleaning etc. I listened to it every day for over a month and my life was transformed. I continue to listen to it from time time to keep me on the right track. Mr Allens voice is also soothing and powerful. The writing is poignant and beautiful. Enjoy. Your life can only get better and better.

"Mind over Muscle, Mind over Matter, Mind over Everything"
That quote is from Denis Waitley's "The New Dynamics of Winning" but it well captures the theme of this book. This book is about the power of one's own thoughts, the thoughts that we truly hold about what is possible, who we are, at the deepest level of our beings, to make themselves come true.
The book is divided into seven chapters, "Thought and Character", "The Effect of Thought on Circumstances", "The Effect of Thought on Healthy and the Body", "Thought and Purpose", "Thought as a Factor in Achievement", "Visions and Ideals" and "Serenity". In chapter 1, Allen writes, "(you) contain within yourself that transforming and regenerative agency by which you may make yourself what you will" (pg 25). One shapes one's own character by the controlled application of thought, will and action. In chapter 2, "...the outer conditions of your life will always be found to be harmoniously related to your inner state" (pg 32). People who love themselves, attract love from others; people who believe they can be sucessful end up causing their belief to come true and being sucessful. Skipping ahead to chapter 7, he writes that serenity is the effect of "see(ing) more and more clearly the internal relations of things by the action of cause and effect, we cease to fuss and fume and worry and grieve, and remain poised, steadfast, serene" (pg 85). When we come to realize that everything we want or fear has certain causes and that to a great extent we have control over those causes, we ceased to be frazzled by external circumstances because we sense a tremendous locus of power within our ownselves to shape our lives, to be the cause of those effects we desire and to stop being the cause of those effects that cause us suffering.
A great book that probably requires some unpacking by the reader given that it is so concise. Highly recommended.

Hits the nail on the head of the cosmos!
This tiny, surprisingly easy-to-read book by James Allen sets you on the edge of your state of being as if by surprise! Stirring, spirit to spirit talk that leaves your life story flashing before your eyes for your re-examination as you ponder its profound basic truths. Upon completing its reading, it left me speechless and in a state of awe (especially due to the fact it was written almost a hundred years ago) that it touched me very deeply at the fiber of my being.

Baree: The Story of a Wolf-Dog
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Author: James Curwood

A great book
This book is definitely one of my my favorite books. Even though it seems a bit long, if you get caught up in stories like I do, you'll wish this book is longer. This book is beautifully written and such a great book in so many ways. You have to read this book. The author of this book is a great writer and this book will not let you down for action, adventure, and many other emotions. READ THIS BOOK! IT'S GREAT!

A Wildlife Adventure
This book is fantastic! It follows the story of a young half wolf, half dog pup who is accidentally seperated from his mother. He learns to survive in the harsh Canadian wilderness and meets friends and foe. He eventually comes to trust humans. The author obviously has a great understanding of animals as he explains in words exactly what the animals feel. The way this book is written is almost unexplainable-right up there with other fine authors such as Jack London. A must-read for any one who loves animals or has an understanding for them!

This book was beautifully written.
I thought this book was wonderful. It should be up there with the best of them, like Jack London's "Call of the Wild". It tells the story of a wolf cub seperated from its mother, and the adventures in the wilderness it encounters. It has very descriptive details and shows us all the true meaning of love and devotion.

Exciting novel that brings out your emotions.
Very original novel. While it is fiction, it was quite clear that the President and those running for Prime Minister of Israel referred to real people (that is if you call Bill Clinton a real person). It shows some of what is wrong in the Universties today and how the P.C. crwod has taken over. It ended with an exciting and satisfying climax. The characters seemed real, some likable, some the opposite. I appreciated Geoff Metcalf turning me onto the book and I cannot wait for his next one.

Spellbinder
I couldn't wait to finish this book. There were elements of Ludlum and Clancy throughout. A fine read, well worth the time.

Bargained for Exchange
Gripping! I kept reading faster & faster, but didn't want to miss anything. Couldn't wait to get to the end ... and what an ending it was!

The Beastly Beatitudes of Balthazar B
Published in Hardcover by Delacorte Press (June, 1968)
Author: James Patrick Donleavy
Average review score:

Unique lyrical narrative voice
Balthazar B. is an aristocrat bewildered at every turn by life. His picaresque journey from Paris to Trinity College Dublin and visitations to country estates and among women of high and dubious social standing is hilarious to behold. The randy foil figure of Beefy may stand as one of the greatest comic figures since Shakespeare's Fat Jack Falstaff. The literary style of Donleavy is itself richly laden with lyricism and poetry and comedy. It is a uniquely pointillistic style in which brush strokes are applied to the canvas with precision and clarity in truncated and non-traditonal but accessible syntax. Like most truly great writers Donleany evokes all of the reader's senses in his work. He also succeeds in arousing sympathy, hilarity, tenderness, grief -- a full range of sensibilities that engage the reader. Each character is roundly drawn and speaks with a unique voice and range of experience. Donleavy's Ginger Man is named among the Random House Top 100 Novels of the 20th Century. He is a supremely talented story teller with an enchanting narrative style that will leave you wanting to read more. Don't miss this novel, The Destinies of Darcy Dancer, Gentleman and the Singular Man -- they are all pleasant and richly satisfying literary treasures.

A gem
A splendid book about one Balthazar B, gentleman at large. Donleavy's writing sparkles with wit, humor and charm, and yet he never shies from the experiences that make Balthazar (and all of us) human: the pursuit of sex and the loss of true love. Balthazar is no cardboard hero for whom everything goes right.

Touching, sad and funny
This book was my introduction to J. P. Donleavey and I didn't know quite what to expect. Early on the book had me laughing out loud, yet throughout there is a strong undercurrent of sadness.

The portion devoted to Balthazar's time at Trinity reminded me of both "Lucky Jim" by Kingsley Amis, and "The Water Method Man" by John Irving. Donleavy uses the academic setting to create situations with a tremendous amount of humor and a profound sense of loneliness and alienation simultaneously.

This introduction led me to pick up four more by Donleavy. The emotion of the book stayed with me for a long time afterward.

Bib Alexander Scourby King James Version New Testament Bible
Published in Audio CD by Riverside World (April, 1995)
Author: Alexander Scourby
Average review score:

The very best Audio Bible available
This reading of the King James Version Bible by Alexander Scourby is a treasure! I own or have listened to most of the other audio Bibles out there and there just is no comparison. Scourby reads in a transparent manner that allows the Bible to come alive. With some audio Bibles I have a hard time listening through the reader's radio-announcer inflections to the underlying message. Not so with Scourby, he justly earns his title of the "Voice of the Bible".

I recommend this Audio CD highly. I don't believe you will be disappointed with it in any way.

A Great work
I wonder when this will be available in CD format? My tapes have had it!

Scorby Reads The Bible Well
Ever had trouble reading the King James version? Alexander Scorby is the reader here and makes the KJV even more enjoyable. His deep, smooth vocals are great for the long drive, to make your work-day go by quicker, to relax to at home, or as an aid in studying the Word. I highly recommend this to anyone who has any reason to reading the Bible.

Blackjack 33

The Quick and the Dead
Jim Donahue's ability to convey the sights, sounds and smells of war in a foreign land are awesome. I was never involved in anything so courageous as the MGF but I can vouch for the authenticity of what is portrayed in this book. These men undertook some of the most daring and heroic operations conducted with scant regard for their own well-being. I tip my hat and render a salute to all members of Blackjack-33. Well Done to all of you. As a former member of USSF Team B-34, Song Be, you've all earned my respect and admiration.

The Best War Book Anyone will Read
I just found out why I contiue to read war books by the hundreds. It's a form of regression back to when I was 10 years old and read all the Sergeant Rock Comics I could get my hands on. That's how I learned to read. BlackJack 33 brought me back with the BLAMS and CRACKS, and TATATATAT's. Awsome! The book was a constant adrenaline rush. It never let up! I shall keep this book and read it over and over. The ending left me with a tight chest and a feeling of intense sadness. I only wish is that this book goes on to be made a movie. I have the sincerest respect for the author and his fellow sodiers. Thank you, from one American.

Blackjack 33
Excellent, edge of your seat book. Always wondering what they could run into next.

American Civil Society: A Book of Questions and Readings
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages (30 August, 2002)
Authors: Jay L. Spaulding, James Jandrowitz, and Jay Spaulding
Average review score:

Good Readings
This very useful work is a collection of readings meant to be a cross section of the important issues in American society and history. Each reading is followed by a series of questions designed to stimulate classroom discussion. One of the advantages of this book is that, instead of going to the usual canon of authors, the editors chose less obvious works. These explore many of the core issues in American history; race, personal freedom, and questions of citizenship. Overall an excellent selection. Can be used for a number of different US history and society classes.

An absolute must for the student of American history
A brilliantly collected array of superior sources, representing the cultural diversity of America. This collection offers the reader the opportunity to examine not only the ideological sources that influenced the founders of this country, but also the documents that have molded our laws, society, and culture into what it is today. Study questions are designed for the reader to interpret the sources on their own. This collection of essays is particularly useful for college instructors teaching students the processes of independent and analytical thought.

A Fascinating Glimpse Into The Formation of A Great Society
How did we get to the way of life we all come to expect in America? Where are the roots of our civil liberties? Did American democracy suddenly burst upon the scene? Or were there revelations and breakthroughs along the way? What were the problems confronted along this development? These questions are explored in this outstanding collection of readings on American Civil Society. Any one who is a teacher or any one who has wondered about the workings of the American way of life and how it came about will finally find the most superb collection of literature to date on this subject. Commencing with readings from Exodus through Confucius to the European thinkers and some of our founding fathers; leading on to various seminal court cases, a fascinating glimpse into the formation of a great society unfolds. For this reason, I recommend Civil Society in America for any of you who have a desire to explore our way of life in this great hour of challenges and struggles.

Apples, Bubbles, and Crystals: Your Science ABCs
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (01 March, 1996)
Authors: Andrea T. Bennett, James H. Kessler, Melody Sarecky, and Jim H. Kessler
Average review score:

Best science experiment book for the under seven set
My five year old loves the idea of doing science experiments, so I have purchased three or four science books geared for kids her age. This is the best one that I have seen. The activities are fun and easy to do. Almost all of them require only materials that are readily available in the average household. Most take under half an hour from start to finish. The reason that I gave the book only four stars and not five is that the poems themselves are not great. Bottom line: the science experiments are terrific, but the book is not a great read.

Easy-to-Do Projects That Kids Love
I bought this for my 5-year-old daughter and she loves it. It has many classic children's science projects, like making a tornado using two soda bottles, and all of the projects use common materials and are easy to do. They are just right in length and complexity for her age.

Great poems and science projects for kindergarten teachers!
I just went to the California Kindergarten Conference and saw this book presented. There is a poem and a science project for each letter of the alphabet. They are simple, hands-on experiments and very affordable for the K-1 teacher.

Aristotle's Poetics
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (January, 1983)
Authors: Aristotle, James Hutton, and Grodon M. Kirkwood
Average review score:

An Invaluable Tool For Writers
Well, the only reason anyone would need this book is if they were trying to understand the concepts of literature or if they were planning to write. AH, and if they are, this book is a CRUCIAL STUDY. As an English Major, I encountered WAY TOO MANY critiques that are based on absurd marxist theories. Remember, literature reflects a SPECIFIC TIME, PLACE, AND ERA! I am a devout Anglican and I DO NOT shun Hawthorne's work because much of it is Anti Anglican. I understand that Hawthorne was reflecting an Anti Anglican Period in America. It is absurd to judge literature harshly because it does not fall into contemporary political slots whatever they may be at the moment. This book by Aristotle is a concise, focused, and appropriate look at the concept of literature. He emphasizes the need of close conflicts as opposed to hero versus enemy. He also makes it clear that writing must have recognition and/or reversal at some point. Also, he states the need for surprise events. Another thing he does is he helps us see that some events may be important, but it is better to mention them instead of displaying them. He also stresses the need for characters to play on our fear or pity. While this is more of a reference book, it belongs in the library of any student of literature.

Poetry in Poetics
I loved this text! It is amazing and lyrical, an incomparable read! It now lives next to my bed, so that whenever I get the need I can read an extract (even at 2am) without having to search through the library for it.

Where art theory began
This book (or perhaps just a portion of Aristotle's lecture notes) remains the acorn of an oak of subjects, from art criticism to writing screenplays. This is a clear, accurate translation (it helped me pass a test in Ancient Greek; and people who really know assure me). The text is no-frills and the introduction is brief but informative. This is probably not for scholars who will want to quibble over the meaning of 'phusis' and 'techne' but for the general reader who will be infinitely enriched by a philospical masterwork. If you have to read this for a class you will find it infinitely less punishing than Nietzsche, for example.
